As the clock ticked and edged closer to midnight, the United States government remained locked in an intense standoff. The proposed cuts made by President Donald Trump and congressional republicans have drastically reduced national government funding, and have since sparked concern among many people in the country.
On October 1 2025, the U.S. government officially entered its first shutdown since 2018-2019. Millions of federal workers, TSA agents, and flight crew workers were forced to work without pay this year. Even more organizations, such as the Department of Homeland Security, Environmental Protection Agencies, etc., have been left without funding as the negotiations have reached a stalemate.
Two months passed before Republican and Democratic lawmakers were able to come to a consensus on bills regarding the budgeting of government services, one of which involved funding of the Affordable Care Act. When the previous funding allocation legislation expired, it left many federal workers either on unpaid leave or working under the same unfair conditions. This has left critical services provided by the government in an unstable limbo between steady ground and chaos.
In the U.S. government, Congress is currently controlled by the Republican Party, but the Republican Party ran into something unforeseen — they failed to reach the 60 votes required to pass the budgeting clause in the Senate.
This gave room for the Democratic Party to negotiate the solidarity of how the money would be used. It is public knowledge that there is a copious gap between the two parties and their views on what should be the property for the Nation. This made compromise elusive, but necessary to progress the funding process.
This feud has currently come to an end as of November 12, with both parties agreeing to allocate various bills, but certain turmoil has risen by the manner in which the funding has been processed. Affordable Care Act funding and subsidies have still not passed, with both parties still fighting over the general consensus of what is to come.
Right now, the U.S. government is trying to reach common ground on the budget plan for the upcoming year. Looking beyond the numbers, the government has become a testament to how divided the country’s leadership and the common people are, reflecting the state of our nation.
