Congrats to Ms. Brown for being Cherokee’s November 2025 Teacher of the Month! As a technology teacher, Ms. Brown far extends her position past the classroom by advising many extracurricular programs such as Cherokee Digital Media, the Technology Student Association, Aeronautics club, and the Charge Robotics team. She has been teaching for seventeen years, with this being her eleventh year at Cherokee. I conducted an interview with her to learn more about who she is outside of the classroom.
Ms. Brown has three brothers. She enjoys playing soccer and basketball, and she participates in martial arts. She loves the TV shows Friends, Ted Lasso, and Dexter.
She told me that she’s been a teacher for a lot longer than she’s officially been teaching at a school, especially with martial arts.
“I started teaching when I was about ten,” she said. “I kind of always taught that [martial arts] when I did an after school program where I taught, so it just seemed natural to go into teaching.”
She says that her favorite part about being a teacher is the kids.
She told me, “The kids make it worth it. Working with kids is really great.”
She doesn’t like grading as much, as she expressed to me multiple times. The best part about our school, she said, is the size of it.
“There’s just so much stuff that can be done here. Kids get involved in so many different ways and I think that’s really great.”
Ms. Brown is a vital part of helping people get involved, as she runs so many programs.
She says one of her strengths as a teacher is helping kids to problem solve and to do things themselves. This goes hand–in-hand with what she considers a weakness of hers: the way she paces her classes.
“Sometimes I can get a little hands-off because I want kids to kind of figure things out on their own.”
Ms. Brown takes on a lot between her classes, Digital Media, and every other program she advises. She is extremely dedicated to her students and the entire school, and it’s clear that nobody could imagine Cherokee without her!
