Super Bowl LIX took place in New Orleans on Feb 9, 2025. The Chiefs entered the Super Bowl with a 15-game winning streak, while the Eagles had an 8-game winning streak. Many experts believed the Chiefs would win the game because of their starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, but in the end the Eagles won the Super Bowl. The final score was 40-22.
This game was a rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The two teams played each other in Super Bowl LVII in 2023. The Chiefs won by a three-point field goal, making the final score 38-35. This year, Eagles fans were looking for payback. Their defense and offense had improved greatly this year, with their defensive line being considered the best in the league. They had a 14-3 game record going into the Super Bowl.
There was much controversy with the Chiefs getting into the Super Bowl. Many football fans believed that the Chiefs were bribing referees to make calls for them. This includes calls like holding and roughing the passer. These penalties give teams an edge over their opponent. When the defense is given a penalty, the offense will move closer to the end zone. When the offense is given a penalty, the offense is moved further away from the endzone. These penalties can make or break games. Many believed that the AFC Championship game between the Chiefs and Buffalo Bills was rigged, allowing the Chiefs to get to the Super Bowl. There was never any substantial evidence against the refs or the Chiefs. Most of the skepticism came from the disgruntled fans of the teams the Chiefs beat.
Despite the controversies, the Eagles proved they were a better team during the Super Bowl. By halftime the score was 24-0, for the Eagles. The Chiefs only managed to score in the third quarter of the game. The first touchdown from them was a 24-yard long pass thrown by Mahomes to wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the third quarter. This was after the Eagles’ coaches had decided to let up on their defense. By the end of the game, all of the starters were taken out to let the benched players get some playing time. One standout play of the game was Cooper DeJean’s “Pick 6”. DeJean intercepted the ball from a pass thrown by Patrick Mahomes and ran the ball into the end zone for a touchdown.
The city of Philadelphia hosted a Super Bowl Victory Parade on Friday, Feb 14. The players rode on the top of double decker buses through Philadelphia. They started their route at their stadium, the Lincoln Financial Field. They then rode down Broad Street and ended at the Art Museum in Center City. Jalen Hurts, the team’s quarterback and Super Bowl MVP said that, “I told myself that when I got drafted that I wouldn’t come to the Rocky steps until I won the championship. And now we’re here.” He gave this speech, standing on the steps to the Philadelphia Art Museum, the same steps Rocky runs up in Philly’s most victorious movie.
