On March 3, University of Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark set a new NCAA Division I scoring record at 3,685 points. Louisiana State University’s “Pistol” Pete Mavarich, who scored 3,667 career points between 1967 and 1970, previously held the record. This feat makes Clark the highest-scoring player in NCAA history, male or female.
Clark needed 18 points to pass Mavarich’s record during the March 3 game against Ohio State University. She set the record with a free throw in the final second of the first half, saying the record was not on her mind, “but then when they announce it and everybody screams, that’s when I knew.” Clark scored 35 points during the game, and Iowa defeated Ohio State 93-83.
This is not the only record Clark has shattered in recent months. On Feb. 15, she set the record for all-time scoring in NCAA women’s basketball, surpassing University of Washington star Kelsey Plum’s record of 3,527 career points.
In Feb., Clark announced via social media that she is “excited to be entering the 2024 WNBA Draft,” expressing gratitude for those who have “supported [her] during [her] time at Iowa.” She is projected to be the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever.
