Review: Nerve

The hit summer blockbuster, “Nerve,” undoubtedly produces an emotional roller coaster for all who dare to watch. It is guaranteed that this movie will have you on the edge of your seat with the romance, suspense, drama, humor, and everything in between. All teens can relate to the technology-obsessed characters who are in the process of discovering who they truly are and what they want to become. Bigger issues evolve throughout the film such as getting into college and surrounding yourself with lousy friends. The producers of the groundbreaking hit MTV show, “Catfish,” created this film beautifully with perfectly casted characters set in the astounding backdrop of New York City.

Emma Roberts shines as Vee, a bright, somewhat bashful, yet effortlessly cool college-bound Staten Islander.  Vee enjoys staying in the shadows of her outgoing, daredevil best friend, Syd. All of that changes when Syd betrays Vee by humiliating her in front of her longtime crush.  As a result, Vee is tired of being walked all over by Syd and she’s ready to be in the spotlight. Subsequently, she learns about a website called Nerve, where you can either be a watcher or a player. The watchers provide dares for the players to perform as entertainment. The players have to complete the dares given to them in exchange for a great deal of money. Vee teams up with the desirable Ian (James Franco), a well-liked player, and together they complete jaw-dropping, ludicrous challenges.  However, the fun and games come to an abrupt halt when Ian reveals just how dangerous and life-threatening this game can truly become.

I rate this movie 10 out of 10 unquestionably. When “Nerve” ends (with a surprise twist!), you’ll be sad that your time with the thrill-seeking, instantly lovable characters has come to an end. But look deeper into the story line and take the lessons in stride. “Nerve” shows that everyone’s time for adventure will come and it pays off to be brave and take risks. Do yourself a favor and take the hour or so to watch this movie- it’ll be well-worth it.
