Following the amazing Monsterverse movies “Godzilla” (2014), “Kong: Skull Island,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Godzilla X Kong” is the newest intro to the Monsterverse movies. To be honest, it was pretty good. The story follows Kong making his way further down to Hollow Earth, where he finds more large monster apes like him, including a small child ape named Suko and the film’s main antagonist, Skar King.
First, let’s talk about the plot. As usual, the story is somewhat messy, with somewhat forgettable characters. But in this movie, while the characters are two-dimensional and boring, I found myself not getting annoyed by the characters. One new human character popped out to me, named Trapper, who was a funny character.
Now onto the one reason why everyone will watch this movie: the monsters. We get a lot of Kong time but not a lot of Godzilla, mostly because he is evolving throughout the 2nd act of the movie.
Now to talk about the antagonists. Skar King is one of the coolest villains we’ve gotten; he feels like one of the truly evil characters in the Monsterverse. Another antagonist is Shimu, who was said to be the Titan that made the ice age. She is also an awesome antagonist. Also, if you thought that there weren’t already enough fights between Kong and Godzilla, we get a few more. The action in this movie is amazing, and I found myself rooting for the Titans fighting each other. As usual, the CGI and special effects look amazing.
Those were the positives. Now time for the negatives. The characters were lazily written and forgettable, and some plot points will leave you saying, “What just happened?” Another negative is Godzilla himself. While Godzilla is in this movie from beginning to end, we don’t get too much of him, but that is mostly because this is more of a Kong-centered movie. Another complaint is Skar King. While he is an awesome villain, he’s intimidating but not powerful; Kong and Godzilla could’ve just bounced him around like a volleyball if they wanted to, but they instead waited until the last moment to team up and fight him. But other than that, it’s an entertaining movie filled with action and monsters. I give “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” a 7/10.
