As February ends, many spring sports are close to beginning. Cherokee softball tryouts are only a few weeks away. Official tryouts for the team begin March 14th through the 16th, while pitchers and catchers meet on the 11th, 12th, and 13th to practice.
These dates are not part of the tryouts, they are a way for the players to get throwing and catching again before the tryouts and season, just like the optional practices called Winter Workouts that are run by the Senior Captains: Quinn Rosario, Ryleigh Lender, and Morgan Craig.
Winter Workouts are optional practices that aim to improve the players’ endurance and strength so the team is prepared for the season. They have been every Wednesday for the past several weeks where players lift weights, climb ladders, and do wall sits and crunches. These are among many of the stations that the players cycle through every wednesday. The meetings started under the control of Varsity Coach Madgey and assistant varsity Coach McKenna but as weeks have gone by, the captains began to take control of the exercises.
There are currently 57 players registered to tryout as of January 24th. Sadly, as Coach Madgey said in a pre-season meeting pamphlet, “We will look to keep about 45 players max.” The total number of players depends on the amount of uniforms available and the needs of the team.
During tryouts, players will be observed and tested on several different categories like coachability, skill, and flexibility. All of these categories make a good athlete and teammate. Cherokee softball is a competitive team and the coaches want girls with a good mindset.
