Although the class of 2024’s game of Spoons appears to be slowing down, the game is getting even more intense for the remaining players. As tensions run high and interest starts diminishing, here is an update on what happened this week in Spoons.
If you are unfamiliar with the seniors’ annual game of Spoons, check out Volume One of this series, where it is explained!
After making it this far, players who remained in the game this week are especially desperate to get their target out, causing an extreme increase in outside-of-school gameplay. This includes (but is not limited to) staking out in front of their target’s house.
Although Spoons seems like an effortless activity, the game is only possible with someone behind the scenes running it all. This year, the person behind it is senior Elena Kelly.
Elena Kelly took the position because “everyone asked me to do it, so I just volunteered myself. And I figured I’m a pretty honest girl, so I figured I could do it.”
Kelly’s job is to give each player their targets at the start of the new round, make rules clear, and answer all questions related to Spoons.
This is very time-consuming work, especially when the game started with 160 players, “but now there is not that many people, so it’s not that big of a deal,” Kelly says.
Kelly works alone, so all communication and target distribution is up to her.
In Elena Kelly’s opinion, the job can be “fun but… it can be strenuous, just because everyone is texting you, and you have to answer questions, and I don’t like making people upset.”
The leader of Spoons has to make decisions that may upset others (ex. clearing up rule discrepancies), which makes this job difficult.
When a person is in charge of Spoons, they are not allowed to participate themselves, because, as Kelly puts it, “you know everyone’s targets, so that would be an unfair advantage.”
They have a big responsibility, but one the players are grateful that Elena Kelly took on.
This week leaves the game with 15 players remaining. The class of 2023’s game ended during week five last year, so the next round could be a dramatic end.
Congratulations to all the players who have made it so far! All information in these articles comes from personal accounts and interviews, so if you have a story to share, please email [email protected] with your story. Good luck in week five!
