The perfect murder, an unusual array of suspects, and a hotel maid that is watching it all take place. While working her usual day shifts at the Regency Grand Hotel, Molly Grey is held responsible for cleaning, servicing, and tending to millionaire Charles Black’s room. Unfortunately for her, Molly discovers Mr. Black dead in his own bed. By fulfilling her duty as a maid, she has stepped into the crime scene. Can she take her name off the suspect list, and defend her own case before it is too late?
“The Maid,” written by author Nita Prose, is a 304-page murder mystery novel published in January of 2022. The story takes place in Toronto, Canada, following the life of Molly Grey.
Due to Molly’s odd, yet unique personality, she already has the police investigating her. On her own, Molly is an organized, perfectionistic, well-mannered woman, but this can often rub people the wrong way when she interacts with them. Since her grandmother has passed away, who used to simplify life’s problems for her, Molly is left to interpret and navigate the challenges of the world on her own, something greatly difficult for her.
Starting off on her own in her grandmother’s old apartment at twenty-five years old with a small amount of savings and a new job, Molly is a new woman with the same ethics, but will that really be enough for her to make it on her own?
Together, with her newly found friends and allies through co-workers and managers, Molly must protect her reputation and solve the murder of Charles Black, before the real murderer slips away unnoticed.
I really recommend this book to teenagers who love reading murder mystery novels with unreliable narrators, otherwise known as narrators that the readers have difficulty trusting because they have a different perception of the novels’ events in some way. In this case, Molly has difficulty interpreting others, so her perspective is not all reliable, adding more complications, interest, and depth to the novel. This will keep the reader guessing who is the real murderer and if what they’re reading is true based on the clues built up over the course of the novel.
This book will most definitely keep the reader enticed, and I’d say is very interactive. There are many moments where you will feel the need to stop and reevaluate the clues given so far and try to piece together the murder on your own.
With the thrilling, crafty, and creative writing style of Nita Prose supported by the loveable main characters, “The Maid” is a worthy read that will surprise you at every twist and turn, and will nurture the reader with lessons of love, friendship, trust, heartache, and understanding. “The Maid” will make you question if uncovering the murderer is always enough to conclude the mystery.
