Spotify Wrapped: The Most Popular Songs, Albums, and Artists of 2022
Ever since December 2016, Spotify has released a marketing campaign called “Spotify Wrapped.” Released annually, it includes a personal recap for all the Spotify users that highlights their top five most listened to artists, songs, and music genres. Ever since its release, Spotify Wrapped has attracted millions of users globally and has become its foremost promotional tool due to the viral phenomenon it has caused. Although everyone has their individual tastes in music the question remains: Who managed to achieve the coveted top five spot?
The Most-Streamed Artists Globally:
- Bad Bunny: Bad Bunny has been active in the music industry since 2016, but it wasn’t until his feature on Cardi B’s hit song “I Like It” in 2018 that he landed his first hit song. Ever since then, he has collaborated with Drake, Jennifer Lopez, and Dua Lipa. He managed to generate 18.5 billion streams on Spotify this year and has become the first artist to become Spotify’s Top Artist for the third year in a row.
- Taylor Swift: So far, Taylor Swift has released ten studio albums and two re-recorded albums, all but one of which reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Nine of her songs have hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and 40 of her songs made it in the weekly top ten. She even managed to crash Ticketmaster due to the hype over her “Eras Tour” that begins this spring. Despite taking her music off of streaming platforms for three years due to her former belief that music shouldn’t be free to listen to, she still has 36.6 billion total streams, a number that’s only going to grow exponentially.
- Drake: Drake has been a successful musician ever since starring in the hit TV show “Degrassi.” All eight of his albums have reached number one on the Billboard 200 and 11 of his songs have hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That makes him tied with Whitney Houston as the artist with the seventh-most number-one songs. He received 6.7 billion streams this year, proving Drake to be one of the most successful rappers today.
- The Weeknd: After being discovered by Drake in late 2010, The Weeknd has been a prominent force in the music industry. Three out of his five albums have hit number one on the Billboard 200, and his song “Blinding Lights” was declared the biggest song of 2020. He even performed the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2021. Unfortunately, his most recent album, Dawn FM, didn’t perform as well as his previous music, but his fanbase still stuck by him as shown by the 93.2 million monthly listeners he has on Spotify.
- BTS: Since their rise to international stardom in 2018, BTS remains the most popular Korean Pop boy band in the world. Within a span of a year, they managed to have five of their songs reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and their song “Butter” remained number one on the charts for ten weeks. Due to South Korea’s requirement for all able-bodied men to enlist in its military by age 28, all the members have to enlist, therefore causing a hiatus. However, they plan to reunite in 2025 once their enlistment periods are over.
